Patrick Antonius Turned Away From WSOP Main Event
Apparently almost everyone decided that they wanted to wait until day 1D to buy into the main event at the 2009 WSOP. The only problem was that the day was capped at 3,000 entrants. As a result, Patrick Antonius was turned away from the main event.
Patrick Antonius isn’t the only well known poker player who didn’t get into the event. Shannon Elizabeth has also reportedly been turned away from the WSOP due to capacity.
I’m not sure if any Main Event has ever sold out before for a certain day, but I know that this isn’t the first time that this has happened at the WSOP. I don’t say this to blame the WSOP either, I say this to fault the players because they really should have known that this was a possibility. Events reach their capped amount of entrants all of the time at the WSOP and this is not uncommon.
For an event like the WSOP Main Event where you can register several months ahead of time, there is really no excuse for a well known player to not get a spot in this tournament. For a lot of these folks, their public success depends upon getting some TV coverage at the Main Event each year. It’s not just stupid, but it’s a terrible business decision to not pre-register.
