Sit n Go Madness

After taking a few days off from online play to rest my head, I was back playing the sit n go’s online. Staring at a computer screen for hours on end, late at night, and getting no sleep will always take a toll on me. I love the sng play though so it was no problem getting back up for it.

At the level I play at the competition is fairly weak. I guess that’s what’s to be expected at the 10 – 20 dollar level. So after you sign up and the table fills up your table will pop up and your ready to go. When the game starts I’m always looking for a few things right from the start. First, I tend to not get involved in too many pots at the beginning. Simply because it’s not worth it. The blinds are so small that even if I have pocket aces chances are your going to get called. Most of the time you’ll get at least one caller and you can even pick up a few callers. In any case you just have to proceed with caution because every now and then the person who called with his 7 6 off suit will hit. I will definitely mix up that play though.

If you notice that your table is very passive and they like to call but not raise at all then that defines things for you very nicely. First, you can see some flops with speculative hands like suited connectors and small to medium pocket pair for cheap. Second, if they do raise then you know that they actually have a hand so you can know almost immediately where you stand and you can feel fine throwing your k 10 into the muck before you lose any chips. Thirdly, it opens the door for you to be the raiser and most aggressive player at the table. This doesn’t mean be a maniac and raise in the small blind with 3 5 off, but rather raise in position knowing that you can get passive players to fold potentially challenging hands. Although if maniac is your style then it will guarantee you plenty of action most of the time.

So be sure to be very observant at the beginning. You want to identify who your playing against. If you spot a player who is raising constantly or a weak player who just calls everything you should be planning on how to get their chips and make them yours. Identify the potential shark at your table, the call station, the maniac, etc..

Once you’ve done that you can start planning what your best strategy for that table is going to be. Always knowing what type of players your up against is key and let’s you play accordingly. Just make sure you’re not the one they label as “the fish”. Unless of course, that’s your plan.
