Online Freeroll Strategy
Freerolls are a great thing simply because, well, they’re free! However, freerolls can be the hardest tournament to do well in because people play very loose as they have nothing to lose. I have compiled a short list of tips and strategies that have helped me to do well in freerolls.
*Try and play in freerolls with 1,000 players or less. I have found that by the time you get through the first couple rounds that almost half the players are gone. Freerolls aren’t just about skill and savy play. They are also about survival. The more people that are busted the closer to the money you are. Carbon Poker has freerolls every 4 hours with a $50 prize pool. They have a max of 1,000 players and normally you will find no more than 500 at any given one. I signed up primarily to play freerolls and have done pretty well.
*ABC Poker! Pick your starting hands wisely and consider position in every play. This may sound like the book you just read for beginners, however, with the rise of LAG players everywhere you need to pick your battles. People will go in with any 2 cards and you will find yourself playing very scarcely for the first couple rounds.
*Limit your bluffs. People will call to just keep you “honest” or because they believe that their ace-rag is still good. Bluff only people smart enough to be bluffed.
*Also for good measure, show your good hands periodically. Not the ones where you may have bluffed your opponent out of the pot but any hand where you have a good pair, flush, str8, etc… You want to do this because it will give you bluff equity later on. No one is going to think you’re lying when you’ve shown down nothing but good hands.
Playing like this especially if you’re more of a LAG player and you may find yourself shortstacked periodically. Not a big deal! Use up your bluff equity when the blinds are rising and you will find yourself in the race for 1st place!
