Omaha Hi/Low
For those who’ve read my last entry “Omaha,” I’ve decided not to keep you waiting any longer and finally post some of my strategies on Omaha 8 or better. For those who are unfamiliar with the game, please read my post; Omaha. You can find this post and many other funny or strategy related posts in the Big Edge Poker blog.
For those who’re familiar with the game, the biggest difference here is that low hands can win pots as well. This means that you have to make some adjustments to the starting hands that you choose to play. As a beginner you should try to only play starting hands that will allow you to scoop the spot.
For example; If you have A-K-4-2 and the board is A-3-6-7-J, then you have the possibility of winning the hand with either a pair of Aces or with a low hand of A-2-3-4-6 ( Remember! You have to play 2 cards from your 4 hole cards!). Here is a few strategies that if combined with my “Omaha” strategies will keep your bankroll on the upside!
Starting Cards! Now some of you are saying, “Matt, you mentioned this on your other post!” Very, very true. Again, this is very important! I would like to point out that your game can loosen up a bit since you can win with a low hand as well. To do this well, I wouldn’t play a starting hand that didn’t have at least 2 low cards in it and didn’t have at least 3 possible hands to be made.
For example: A 2 K 9 OR 4 5 K K OR A A 6 10
With my strategy, all of these hands can play for a low hand or play as straights or flush possibilites after the flop. IMO, it is very important to give yourself as many options after the flop as you can.
Try not to draw to a low without having some possibility of making a high hand as well. This can be done, but it is sometimes very tricky. The reason is simple: there is often more than 1 person going for the same low. This results in each of these players losing money even when they are able to make their low hand.
On the other hand, if you are able to find a scenario where the other players have straights, flushes and sets, you can play very profitably by just trying to make a low hand.
Trying to scoop the pot is definitely important for new players. Try to play hands that will win the whole pot. A good example would be the nut straight A-2-3-4-5 which would qualify you for the low and hi hand!!! Or just play with tighter starting hand requirements to keep you out of difficult decision making after the flop!
