The Wheel and Evolution of Man

I was just sitting around thinking about how I got into poker and I remembered this story from my first poker game.

We all used to play a little bit of poker when we were kids it seems. Later on in life I was on a ski trip and my friends asked me if I knew how to play poker. I said “I think so, you mean with pairs and full houses and stuff like that?” I think you get the picture as to how advanced my poker game was at that point.

Man Discovers Wheel

Well a few minutes into the game someone turned over a straight to beat me and I shouted out “That’s bullshit, aces are always high and you can’t make a straight with A-2-3-4-5.” ( Man had not learned about the wheel yet)

Man Learns About Proper Use of the Wheel

So… a few hands later I was holding the K-Q in my hand and the board came down A-2-3-9-7. I slammed my cards down on the table for showdown and basically said… read ‘em and weep b@#@hes, I got a straight from the Queen to the 3. It was soon explained to me that Q-K-A-2-3 did not make a straight and consequently I had no chips left. Although man had obtained knowledge of the wheel, he still did not yet understand how to use it. This knowledge would be obtained through trial and error.
