Televised Poker News

The GSN television network announced last week that it will be producing a 5th season of it’s show; High Stakes Poker. This announcement came on the heels of speculation that the show would not continue for another season.

High Stakes Poker showcases one of the world’s largest cash games. In the previous seasons, some players have bought-in for as much as 1 million dollars.

The game is typically run with $300/$600 blinds and a $100 ante. Most hands also have a live straddle of $1200 and occasionally a 4th blind for $2400. The minimum buy-in has traditionally been $100K, but this past season GSN hosted a game with a minimum buy-in of 1/2 million dollars. I haven’t heard anything yet about the stakes for this year’s game, but I am gonna guess that the action will be just as crazy as it has been in previous years.

This isn’t tournament poker. It’s all real cash and these players can lose as much money as they can borrow. High Stakes Poker has provided us with a number of classic moments. GSN has been courteous enough to publish full length versions of all previous HSP episodes on their youtube page. Below is one of last season’s best episodes.

For those of you who read my blog of poker quotes and were intrigued by Gabe Kaplan saying “Phil Hellmuth has a strange look on his face like an ostridge looking to mate”…you can see what that looks like in this episode of High Stakes Poker.

The World Poker Tour also made a recent announcement regarding their broadcast future. After being cancelled on GSN, the WPT was temporarily being filmed without a broadcasting home. Last week it was announced that the WPT’s 7th season will be shown on the Fox Sports Network.
