Kentucky Trying to Seize Gambling Domains
If you thought that the state of Kentucky was bluffing when they said that they would seize more than 140 domain names that are currently owned by internet gambling sites, you were wrong. Lawyers representing the online gaming companies met in a courtroom in Frankfurt, Kentucky earlier this week to plead their cases in front of a judge.
I have been reluctant to post about this on the blog because I’ve been hearing a lot of conflicting things.
It was reported by Gambling911.com that several domain names we’re turned over to the state of Kentucky by Godaddy.
Since this didn’t seem consistent with Godaddy’s policies, I decided not to write anything until now. For what it’s worth, I was able to find this quote from someone representing Godaddy; “We issued a registrar certificate to the state that says the court has jurisdiction over the issue, but it doesn’t have control over the domains, other than the ability to exercise judgment so that when there is a final adjudication on the merits of the case or a settlement by the parties, we will honor that outcome,” Jones said. The state of Kentucky has been arguing that they have the right to seize these domain names under precedent set by other courts.
The judge is going to issue a decision next week. There are some big name poker sites involved here from what I’ve been told; including Full Tilt and Pokerstars. I’m steering clear and not making any predictions as to the outcome of this one for now. I’ll put up some updates as things start to unfold, so be sure to subscribe to the blog.
